Glossary
I have used many shortcuts in this blog and words may have broader meanings than normal. This Glossary will hopefully help to understand the text.
Apologia:
The title of a 9,000 word essay written by Caylan in 2019. The word “apologia” comes from Greek and means a formal defence, not an apology, which describes Caylan’s Apologia.
It is a “this is what really happened” manifesto and commences with the words, “I resigned because I believe in truth, not because I fear truth”.
Article
The article about Caylan published by Press Progress on March 18, 2019; it was the cause of her resignation and all that followed.
Caylan
Caylan Ford, the Plaintiff in the lawsuit.
CBC
Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.
Defendants:
Two or more of the defendant parties, but might also refer to their respective employees, to their lawyer(s), or to the legal position advanced by their lawyers.
Hlady:
A former MLA who had lost 2 elections; and became a nomination candidate competing with Caylan; he and Jivraj were allies; they packed the inaugural Mountainview meeting and elected Jivraj as president of the association; he was a nomination candidate opposing Caylan but was disqualified by the Party, ostensibly because a residency issue; but was alleged to have engaged in inappropriate behavior of a sexual nature.
Justice:
The Honourable Madam Justice Lorena Harris, the presiding trial Justice.
Kinney
Duncan Kinney, who is a leftwing journalist and activist; a former editor of Progress Alberta, he was charged with mischief for vandalism; he has settled out of court
Lebrun:
The Defendant Luke Lebrun, editor of Press Progress and writer of most the articles about Caylan.
Messages:
The 600-odd Facebook Messages exchanged between Caylan and Jivraj over a period of about 3 months in 2017; they completely occupy a 3-ring exhibit binder.
Mountainview:
The Calgary Mountainview riding.
Nanda:
Avnish Nanda - was then a lawyer practicing in Edmonton who claimed to be a constitutional law professor.
Parties:
Two or more of the defendant parties, but might also refer to their respective employees, to their lawyer(s), or to the legal position advanced by their lawyers
Party:
Usually, the UCP party, but may also refer to its employees.
Press Progress:
The publication by that name; the name is a cover for the Broadbent Institute which is the publisher.
Richard:
Richard E. Harrison, Caylan’s Counsel, but may also refer to a legal position he is taking on Caylan’s behalf.
Sadiq
Sadiq Valliani, a very experienced political campaigner at a senior, management level. He became a close friend to Caylan and her principle advisor. He managed her nomination campaign and contributed significantly to her election campaign. After the disaster, Sadiq called Caylan every night for 18 months trying to support her.
